What is Right to Rent? Under the Immigration Act 2014, all private landlords and letting agents in England must check that every adult aged 18+ who will live in the property has a legal "right to rent" — i.e. the lawful immigration status to reside in the UK. This involves us viewing and copying original documents such as a British or Irish passport, a share code (via the UK government "View and prove your immigration status" service), or a valid immigration status document. We carry out this check before the tenancy starts and repeat it for any new occupant. It is a legal requirement and forms part of our standard referencing process.
